How to Measure for a Leather Harness (and Why Fit Matters More Than Size)
A leather harness lives against your body. Unlike a loose garment, it is only as good as its fit — a harness that sits a centimetre too high, gaps at the strap, or pinches at the ring stops looking like a sculpted second skin and starts looking like a costume. Getting the fit right is the difference between a piece you reach for again and again and one that stays in the drawer.

What You’ll Need to Measure Yourself
You only need three things: a soft measuring tape (the fabric kind used for sewing), a mirror, and a few quiet minutes. If you don’t have a soft tape, use a piece of string, mark it, and measure the string against a ruler afterwards.
A few rules that make every measurement more accurate:
- Measure over bare skin or close-fitting underwear, not over clothing. Bulk from a sweater or jeans will throw the numbers off by several centimetres.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight. It should sit flat against your skin without compressing it. You should be able to slip one finger under the tape.
- Stand naturally. Don’t suck in, don’t puff out, don’t hold your breath. Measure the body you actually have, standing relaxed.
- Keep the tape level all the way around. This is where a mirror helps — it’s easy to let the tape ride up at the back without noticing.
The Key Measurements for a Leather Harness
Depending on the style you’re after, you’ll need some or all of the measurements below. When in doubt, take them all — it takes five minutes and means we can build any piece to fit you.
Bust & Overbust (for harness bras and body harnesses)
Bust: measure around the fullest part of your chest, with the tape level across the nipples and around the back. Overbust: measure directly above the bust, high under the arms and across the top of the chest, where a harness’s upper straps typically sit. These matter most for full-body harnesses and harness bras.
Underbust (for harness bras and structured pieces)
Measure directly beneath the bust, around the ribcage, where a bra band would sit. This is a critical measurement for any harness that anchors under the chest — it’s what keeps the piece from riding up.
Waist (for harness belts, body harnesses, corsets)
Measure around the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel. Don’t measure at the belt line of your jeans — that’s often lower than your true waist.
Hip (for full-body harnesses and pieces that sit on the hips)
Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, keeping the tape level.
Thigh (for leg garters and thigh harnesses)
Measure around the fullest part of your upper thigh, where a garter is designed to sit. If you want the garter to sit higher or lower than the fullest point, measure at the exact height you intend to wear it and let us know. This is the key measurement for our leg garters.
Neck (for chokers, collars, and neck-anchored harnesses)
Measure around the base of your neck where a collar naturally rests. Add a finger’s width if you prefer a looser sit. Use this for our chokers and collars.

Send us both sets of measurements or the areas where you fall between sizes. Because we build to measure, we can construct your piece to your true proportions rather than rounding you up or down to a size that doesn’t quite fit.
Should I size up or size down?
Neither — measure accurately and match your numbers to the chart, or send us your measurements. Leather doesn’t stretch the way fabric does, so guessing a size up “to be safe” usually results in a piece that gaps and loses its structure. Accurate measurement beats sizing strategy every time.
How should a harness feel when it fits correctly?
Snug and secure, following the shape of your body, with no pinching and no gaping. You should be able to move comfortably, and the leather should sit flat against you rather than standing away from the skin.
Can I wear an ENCHAINE harness over clothing?
